Written by: Editor

According to a study carried out in Ireland, the Irish shoppers will spend throughout 2018 more than EUR 10,9 billion on groceries. This will mark an increase of EUR 420 million, compared to the situation of 2017. Up until February 2018, the Irish shoppers have purchased groceries in a total amount of EUR 2,56 billion, which represents an increase of 3,9% compared to the first two months of the previous year, in the situation in which the prices for groceries did not change substantially compared to 2017 (however, a small decline of 0.1% was observed). Our team company formation specialists in Ireland can advise foreign businessmen on the procedure of importing and selling groceries on the local market.

Shopping habits in Ireland

As a general rule, most of the Irish citizens purchase their groceries from large supermarkets which have business activities in other countries as well. 88,8% of all the groceries are purchased from well-known supermarkets, while a share of 11,2% of the local groceries are bought from independent chains. Our team of consultants in company registration in Ireland can offer legal assistance on the main procedures for setting up a supermarket in this country.

The increase was caused by the change in the purchasing habits of the local citizens. Irish citizens are interested in purchasing top grocery products, which are more expensive compared to other available products.

At the same time, the local consumers purchase more groceries compared to the previous years, an aspect which was observed for other categories of products and services available in Ireland. In this sense, it is important to know that the household expenditure of the Irish citizens increased by 4.5% in February 2018 (compared to February 2017).
